Barboursville Ruins

Barboursville is the ruin of the mansion of James Barbour, located in Barboursville, Virginia. He was the former U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of War, and Virginia Governor. It is now within the property of Barboursville Vineyards.

Exchange Hotel Museum

400 South Main Street
Gordonsville, VA

Before the Civil War, the Exchange Hotel with its high ceiling parlors and grand veranda welcomed passengers from the two rail lines: the Virginia Central Railroad and the Alexandria Railroad. Soon war began. Troops, supplies, and wounded were transported on these railroads to Gordonsville. The Exchange Hotel became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital which provided care for 70,000 soldiers, both Confederate and Union. In the reconstruction period, this hospital served the newly freed slaves as a Freedman’s Bureau Hospital. As the United States healed and the railroads boomed, this graceful building returned to its role of hotel. Now fully restored, the hotel is a museum dedicated to the Civil War era.

Historic Orange Train Station

The Orange Train Station was built in 1909-1910, in a colonial revival style. Passenger train service was discontinued in the early 1970’s. The station was renovated in1977, and it’s the home of the Orange County Visitors Center. Stop in for information about the area, as well as free maps and brochures.

Lake Orange is a 124-acre Department-owned public fishing lake in Orange County that was impounded in 1964 and opened to fishing in 1967. The lake is located a few miles east of Orange, VA and offers a scenic setting surrounded by gently rolling farmland and hardwood forests. Access to the lake is off of the main lake peninsula on the western side where the boat ramp, concession, fishing pier, parking lot, picnic facilities and plenty of great shoreline access can be found.

Montpelier Hiking Trails

Montpelier’s 8+ miles of well-marked walking trails are one of the Virginia Piedmont’s best-kept secrets, located just two hours south of Washington, D.C., and a half hour north of Charlottesville. Winding through horse pastures, wildflower meadows, and forests, including the Old-Growth Landmark Forest, the trails offer spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and intimate encounters with native plants and wildlife. The Montpelier Trails are open to the public seven days a week during business hours and may be accessed from the trailhead kiosk just below the parking lot at the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center.

Oakland Heights Farm

The Rapidan Wildlife Management Area has an exceptional native trout fishery. Healthy populations of brook trout abound in its rivers and streams; most notable of which are the Rapidan and Conway Rivers. The Conway River also contains numerous wild brown trout to entice the adventurous angler. Small, swift-flowing head water streams grade into larger boulder adorned rivers. Cascading white water interspersed with shallow and deep quiet pools filled with native trout provide a wonderful experience for the trout angler. Fish-for-fun regulations apply on the Rapidan River and all its tributaries within the boundaries of the wildlife management area and Shenandoah National Park.
